Finally getting its due, this underappreciated darkly comic masterpiece from director Martin Scorsese (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Killers of The Flower Moon) hits the big screen in a stellar new 4K restoration. Here Scorsese poses the question, ‘What if the awful date you thought would never end… didn’t end?’
When Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) has a chance encounter with a mysterious woman (Rosanna Arquette) in a coffee shop he is unwittingly dragged into a bizarre late night adventure in the seemingly inescapable bohemian enclave of 1980s SoHo, taking in everything from an intimidating underground N.Y. Punk club (on Mohawk night), through to a surreal visit to an artist’s residence to collect a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight. Featuring a great cast including Teri Garr (Close Encounters), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), and even Cheech & Chong. This Kafkaesque cult classic is a seriously overlooked slice of comedic brilliance from perhaps the world’s greatest living director.
